SCENARIO / EXPLORATIONS · A DIALOGUE SHORT
Dottie, an elderly woman in a burgundy cardigan, looks out of a rainy window toward a lighthouse at night

AN ANIMATED SHORT · A SCENARIO EXPLORATION

Dottie's
Voice.

A radio actress who stopped speaking.
A night aide with a box of old tapes.
One line, read badly, that brings her back.

01 / THE FILM

Someone gave her
her lines back.

Sixty-one seconds, three characters and two rooms on a rainy night by the sea. Turn the sound on: the story is in what they say.

02 / ONE CAST, ONE LOOK

Three people.
One film.

The women came out in a textured, caricatured realism; the aide arrived rounder, closer to a cartoon. A new sheet drawn with only the approved sheets as style references made him belong.

03 / LIGHT BEFORE MOTION

Relight the set,
not the prompt.

The bedroom was relit before any video: one warm pool from the lamp, cold moonlight with rain-streak shadows, haze and grain. Every shot inherits that texture from its references.

04 / THE PROMPT IS A CHOREOGRAPHY

Describe every second.
Leave nothing to invent.

In an early take the reels were already turning before anyone touched the recorder. Writing the shot second by second, causes before effects, took that freedom away.

  1. 0.0 to 1.5 sHe lowers the box of reels to the floor. The recorder's reels stay perfectly still.
  2. 1.5 to 2.5 sHis finger presses the play key with a click. Until the click, both reels remain motionless.
  3. 2.5 sOnly now the reels turn and the recording plays: "Radio Aurora presents... The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife."
  4. 3.5 to 6.0 sHe rests his hand on his knee, lifts his head and looks toward the lit door.
Bruno crouches in the corridor and presses the play key of the reel-to-reel recorder
Measured on the final take: motion inside the reels stays low until the press at about two seconds.

05 / EMOTION IS BUILT

Start calm.
Let the scene earn it.

She begins with a serene gaze at the rain, hears her own young voice, takes her time to turn, and only by her first words are her eyes wet.

WET EYES, DRY CHEEKS

Tears that behave like water.

Generated tears tended to stick to the cheek like paint. The direction changed to eyes that are moist and shining while the cheeks stay dry.

ONE CANONICAL PROP

Always the same woman.

The photo of young Dottie hangs on her wall and appears in Bruno's hand. It is one image, reused in both places.

06 / FIXES THAT KEPT THE STORY

Repair the shot,
not the film.

When one moment failed, only that moment was made again, from its own frames. The rest of the section and its timing stayed untouched.

01 / LOCK BOTH ENDS

For the entrance, the first frame and an edited last frame went to the video model. It only fills in the movement between them.

First frame: the bedroom with the door closedLast frame: the door open and Bruno at the bedside table
02 / EDIT ONE FRAME

A close-up came out with cartoon eyes. One corrected frame became the start of the close-up in the film.

Before: Bruno's close-up with oversized cartoon eyesAfter: the corrected close-up with realistic eyes
03 / THE SAME FACE

In the wide entrance Bruno's face was about fifteen pixels tall at low resolution, and his eyes deformed. His close-up became the identity reference and the shot was generated again at 1080p.

Before: Bruno's face in the wide shot, with deformed eyesAfter: Bruno's face matching his close-up

07 / SOUND OUTSIDE THE MODEL

Dialogue in the shot.
Score in the edit.

Every video prompt asked for no music: the shots carry only voices, footsteps, the tape and the room. Ambience and a three-movement score were made separately and ducked under the dialogue.

DIALOGUE AND NATIVE SOUNDFrom each shot
Spectrogram of the dialogue stem across the film
AMBIENCECorridor hum, rain on the window
Spectrogram of the ambience stem, with changes at each location cut
SCOREFelt piano, nylon guitar, cello
Spectrogram of the score, silent where the tape snaps

The score falls silent where the tape snaps, and dips again so Helena can hear her mother down the corridor.
